Mykola PYMONENKO (Nikoly Pimonenko) (1862-1912)

The Reaper. 1889. Oil on canvas. 137x75 cm. National Art Museum of Ukraine. Kyiv.

Pimonenko (1862-1912), Ukrainian artist, was extremely popular during his lifetime among collectors of the Russian Empire. Even the czar’s family had his work in their possession. Therefore, it is not surprising that his pictures have been falsified rather frequently. I saw many false ‘Pymonenkos’ but I had no doubts that The Reaper, which I saw at one collection in S.-Petersburg, was authentic. This was suggested both by the high mastery and by the fact that it was mentioned in a catalogue the Traveling Exhibition. This picture is now on display in the National Art Museum of Ukraine, in Kyiv.

Major exhibitions:

  • 19th Traveling Exhibition, 1889,  S.-Petersburg.

  • Permanent Exposition of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Kyiv, from 1966.
